Still, this is a good example of anvil-to-ground lightning ("bolt from the blue") and may have been a positive lightning bolt. It's nice how it punches through the lower deck of clouds. If it helps any: does your Sony allow manual focus or focus lock? If it allows focus lock, find something well-lit in the distance to focus on, do a half press of the shutter button, and lock the focus. Then your good to go. Thanks for posting!

The distant focus is good advice. I usually do this a few times during a shoot, to ensure proper focus. Find something in the distance that is lit or has contrast, let the lens auto-focus, then place the focus in manual. Make sure the focus is near or about infinity. And try not to bump the lens after focus.
